Oil Slick Causes Motorcycle Cop to Crash, Snarls Traffic on 92

Slippery spot near Skyline Boulevard caused Daly City officer to lose control of the bike, which was struck by a utility truck.

An oil slick on state Highway 92 near Skyline Boulevard this afternoon caused a Daly City police motorcycle officer to lose control of the bike, which was then struck by a utility truck, according to the California Highway Patrol.

Initially, the CHP received reports at about 4 p.m. of a disabled 2000 Ford utility truck in the eastbound lanes of traffic, Officer Ralph Caggiano said. Earlier reports indicated that the motorcycle officer was also involved in the crash and sustained minor injuries but that it was unclear how the truck became disabled, he said.

All lanes in both directions were temporarily shut down, Caggiano said, with both eastbound and westbound traffic later directed along the westbound lanes while a Sig-alert was in effect for 45 minutes. The CHP issued the alert at 4:27 p.m.; it was cancelled at 5:12 p.m.

Caggiano said that Caltrans crews finished cleaning up the oil from the roadway using absorbent material at 5:55 p.m. and that the oil was present on the road before the crash.
