In a matter of hours two mountain lions were spotted in different parts of San Mateo County Monday night, San Mateo County emergency officials said.
The first sighting was around 7 p.m. near state Highway 92 just east of state Highway 35, emergency officials said.
About four hours later and less than 15 miles away around 11:15 p.m. a big cat was seen just east of Lindenbrook Road in Woodside.
Emergency officials offer the following tips for those living in mountain lion territory, which includes more than half of California:
- If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.
- Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
- Keep a close watch on small children.
- If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
- Pick up small children.
