Mountain Lion Spotted Monday Night

The animal was seen around 6 p.m. in Portola Valley.

A mountain lion was spotted near a business in Portola Valley on Monday night, according to San Mateo County emergency officials.

An off-duty Peninsula Humane Society officer saw the creature at about 6 p.m. in the 800 block of Portola Road.

Sheriff's deputies searched the area but did not find the mountain lion.

If you see a mountain lion DO NOT APPROACH IT, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

  • Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.
  • Keep a close watch on small children.
  • If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.
  • Pick up small children.

If it were only easy if Fish and Game could GPS/track most Lions that keep coming back to people's back yards, digging up our trash looking for food. "Sigh"

maybe if humans weren't eroding away their natural space, they wouldn't have to come into ours.....

Just two days ago in southern California DGF officials showed they truly are exploring better options of dealing with mountain lions and they tranquillized and relocated a mountain lion. I was very pleased and am proud that they seem to be learning from their mistakes.

Ther is definitely a mountain lion in that area -- my dogs smell that area and refuse to walk there-- and they have no problem hiking in coyote or bobcat territory. I do think we need a better system for tracking them and scaring them away. Maybe a quick tranquilizer for cops to carry? A true "stun gun" for animals and humans.

Carla I agree with you 100%!! We need to find a better way to remove them from the area besides killing them. They don't want to be around us but we left them no choice but to come in to our backyards. I think they are beautiful animals and DO NOT DESERVE TO BE KILLED!!!!

Do any of you have young kids?
Dan January 29, 2013 at 11:12 pm
Hector, yes. Just means we have to be responsible parents that acknowledge that we chose to live in a community with wildlife. You could always try moving to a more urban area where mountain lions and wildlife don't "threaten" you.

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
