Mountain Lion Spotted in San Carlos

The carnivorous cat was seen near Heather Park on Thursday night.

A mountain lion was spotted near Heather Park in San Carlos on Thursday night, emergency officials said Friday.

The animal was seen at about 6 p.m. in the 400 block of Portofino Drive, walking down the street close to an apartment complex, according to San Mateo County emergency officials.

Residents are advised to not approach mountain lions, especially one that is feeding or with offspring. Most mountain lions will try to avoid confrontation.

Here are a few tips:

Avoid hiking or jogging when mountain lions are most active—dawn, dusk, and at night.

Keep a close watch on small children.

If you encounter a mountain lion, do not run; instead, face the animal, make noise and try to look bigger by waving your arms; throw rocks or other objects.

Pick up small children.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
