Girl, Motorcyclist Killed in Separate East Palo Alto Crashes

Both crashes occurred Wednesday morning.

(BCN) A young girl was struck and killed by a car in East Palo Alto Wednesday morning, just a block away from where a motorcyclist died after being hit by a driver fleeing from police, authorities said.

The child was struck at about 8:15 a.m. at Bay Road and Gloria Way, Menlo Park Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said.

Maria Lopez, who lives on Bay Road near where the accident happened, said she went outside after the collision and saw a little girl who appeared to be about 5 years old lying in the street.

She described the driver as a young woman who appeared to be in her early 20s.

The girl was a student at Cesar Chavez Elementary School, a school employee said.

Earlier Wednesday, a motorcyclist was killed by a driver speeding away from police, police said.

East Palo Alto acting police Capt. Jeff Liu said that at about 5:25 a.m., police learned of a suspicious vehicle that didn't have its lights on.

An officer tried to pull the car over but the driver accelerated away and drove the wrong way on University Avenue, he said.

A short time later, the car struck the motorcyclist near University Avenue and Bay Road, Liu said.

Several people were detained for questioning after the crash.
