Five Arrested in Hillsborough Burglary Attempt

Police say the suspects were in possession of burglary tools.

Officers arrested five males suspected of attempted burglary in Hillsborough on Thursday, police said.

Police received reports of an attempted break-in at an occupied home at around 6:30 p.m. The suspects drove away and the resident reported the incident to officers, who stopped a car and contacted its five occupants, San Mateo County officials said.

One San Mateo Patch reader witnessed the arrest and offered the following account:

“Yesterday as I was walking my dogs in Hillsborough, I watched as a policeman stopped a vehicle with (five) men inside right across from where I was standing. The officer got out of his car, drew his gun and ordered the occupants of the vehicle to show their hands. Four other police cars showed up at the same time. I didn’t stick around to see what was going to happen next. My wife happened to drive past the area about an hour later and said she saw the men sitting in the police cars.”

Police later said the suspects were in possession of burglary tools.

The car was impounded and all five suspects were arrested on suspicion of attempted burglary, conspiracy to commit burglary, and possession of burglary tools. The suspects were booked into the Maguire Correctional Facility in Redwood City.

Hillsborough homes have been targeted in a string of burglaries since April, police said. It was not immediately known if the five arrested are suspects in any prior burglaries.

Victims of prior burglaries are urged to call police at (650) 375-7470 for any questions about specific cases.
