Car Fire Slows Traffic on San Mateo Bridge

Two lanes were blocked off as fire crews worked to put out a fully engulfed BMW Tuesday evening.

A car fire on the San Mateo-Hayward bridge has blocked two lanes of westbound traffic Tuesday evening, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The fire was reported at about 6:30 p.m. in one of the westbound lanes of the bridge, the CHP said.

Two lanes were quickly blocked off as fire crews worked to put out the fully engulfed BMW.

The lanes were expected to be blocked for at least half an hour. Smoke has been coming from the bridge, and while the westbound lanes aren't the most traffic-heavy at this time of day, traffic has also slowed in the busier eastbound lanes of the bridge.
