Canadian Man Pleads No Contest to Child Annoyance

A Canadian man arrested in March for allegedly trying to meet a San Mateo teenager for sex has pleaded no contest to misdemeanor child annoyance and will spend 60 days in jail for the crime, a district attorney's spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Adam Robert Ouellette, 26, a Canadian citizen of Calgary, made his plea during a pretrial conference on Tuesday in San Mateo County Superior Court Judge Barbara Mallach's courtroom, spokeswoman Karen Guidotti said Wednesday.

Ouellette was arrested in March after San Mateo police learned that while posing as a 14-year-old, Ouellette had contacted a San Mateo 16-year-old online and propositioned her, according to police.

The district attorney's office reported that Ouellette had confessed to the victim that he was actually 26 years old but still asked that the victim to meet him at a hotel in San Francisco.

A decoy officer posing as the girl continued to chat with Ouellette and later discovered his intention of flying to the Bay Area to make contact with the teen, according to San Mateo police.

Ouellette was arrested when he flew in from Canada on March 19 in a multi-agency effort that included teams from the Calgary Police Service and the Southern Alberta Internet Child Exploitation team who ensured the suspect boarded the plane and teams from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations and the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office Airport Division.

Ouellette remains out of custody on $120,000 bail. He will begin serving his time on Sept. 14. He must also register as a sex offender for life, pay several fines and remain on court probation for three years, according to Guidotti.
