Simple Tips to Keep Your Home Secure

A Few Easy Ideas to Keep Your Possesions Safe

With the recent burglaries in San Mateo, Foster City and other areas on the peninsula, there's some simple tips that can keep you secure. You can never be too safe when it comes to protecting your property and family.

  • I'm still astonished when I hear that some people still stash a key under the front door mat. It's better, if you must stash a key out side of your home, wrap it in aluminum foil and bury it a few inches under ground. Don't forget to have a "landmark" so only you and your family knows where the key is.

  • If you are out of town for a period of time, silence you phone. A loud unanswered land-line lets the world know when you're on vacation.

  • Never leave notes on your front door for service people, that's yet another way of saying your house is empty.

  • Out walking your dog? Forget something? Lock your doors and secure your home while you're out.

  • A lock on your mail box is another precaution to think about. There's a great deal of personal information that passes through your mailbox on a regular basis.

  • Keeping your doors locked even when you are home is important. It's not unusual for a home to be burglarized while a decoy keeps you busy at the front door.

  • Think like a thief. Walk around the exterior of you home and find weaknesses that could make you a victim.

If your home is on the market for sale, NEVER allow anyone into your home if they are not with a Realtor.
