Five Things to Know About Ramadan

About 23 percent of the world’s population is Muslim, yet few outside the religion understand its holidays. Here’s a primer on Ramadan, a month-long celebration that began last week.

What is Ramadan? Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar, and the month when it is believed that the Holy Qur’an was sent by God to Prophet Muhammad. During that month, from dawn to dusk, observant Muslims abstain from eating, drinking, sex, smoking and anything that would distract from the observance of the faith.

When does Ramadan take place? The Islamic calendar is based on a lunar calendar, which means it has 354 days a year instead of 365. Since each month begins with a crescent moon, pinpointing the exact start of Ramadan begins with the sighting of the new moon, which may differ among Muslims in different geographic locations. This year Ramadan began on July 20 and runs through August 18.

Why fast during Ramadan? Muslims believe that fasting teaches patience, modesty, spirituality, and reminds followers of religious obligations. The absence of food and drink and other pleasures provides an opportunity to focus on prayer and reading the Qur’an.

What is Eid-ul Fitr? This is the celebration that comes at the end of Ramadan, the Festival of Fast-Breaking. It begins when the new moon is seen, around the 29th or 30th day of the fast. There is feasting and celebrations with family as well as donations of food to the poor.

What Other Ways do Muslims Observe Ramadan? During Ramadan, many Muslims donate more to charities and help those in need within their communities. Beyond that, it is meant to be a time when people focus on becoming better people by refraining and resisting temptations of the physical body for the sake of the spiritual.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.
