San Mateo Slammers Dominate
NorCal Softball Championships

San Mateo, CA—Four San Mateo Slammers teams participated in the Norcal Championships this past weekend. With two first-place finishes, and two fourth-place finishes, all earned spots in prestigious tournaments later in the summer. The age 12u and 10u class B teams qualified to play in the Western Nationals held July 28 through August 3 in Roseville, while the 12u and 10u class C teams qualified for the California State Games held July 11 through July 13 in San Diego.

The age 12 and under “B” team had a win-loss record of 4-0 and earned the title of NorCal Champion. The team worked together to showcase incredible batting, lights-out pitching, smart base running, and a tight defense. They even successfully pulled off a carefully practiced “trick” play and made their hard-working coaches proud.

With a 5-0 win-loss record, the age 12 and under “C” team also earned the title of Norcal Champion. Makaila Tuakoi pitched a perfect game vs. Palo Alto Heat. In addition, triples were hit by Shannon Galliano, Makaila Tuakoi, Charlotte Velasquez, Kaitlyn O’Keefe, and Samantha Yap. In the final game, Nicole Siotos hit a homerun and pitched the entire seven innings.

The age 10 and under “B” team eliminated rival Foster City Flash but was unable to defeat their nemesis--the West Valley Slammers—in an exciting back-and-forth contest for third place. In an earlier game against a Carmel team, Alyssa Hurd and Erin Whang each hit a homerun; triples were hit by Peri Hocevar and Alexis Madera. Slammers defeated Carmel 15-0.

The 10 and under “C” team also fell during a battle for third place. Prior to that, Sydney Lee pitched a perfect game against the Benecia Outlaws—final score 20-0—and Alex Bunton pitched a 6-0 shutout against Campbell Crush. RBIs from Alex as well as Sara Burnett, Chaelyn Fuentes, Mae Montgomery, Eva Montgomery and Maddie Mitchell helped the team win several of their games by a wide margin.

The San Mateo Slammers are all-star, fast pitch, travel ball teams made up of girls who recently finished regular season play through the San Mateo Youth Softball Association (SMYSA). Chanteloup Field, at Beresford Park, is home to SMYSA. For more information on SMYSA and the Slammers visit smysa.org.
