Competetive Rowers from all around the Bay Area converged on San Mateo Lagoon this weekend. The Bair Island Aquatic Center (BIAC) Fall Regatta is held every November on the San Mateo Lagoon, it is a challenging race course with excellent flat water conditions.
This is an official U.S. Rowing event. All individual rowers and crews in the regatta completed a 5,000-meter "Head" race. Each race was rowed as a professional race against the clock.
Perry Collonge is the head coach of the BIAC novice team.
"The masters are out here, after having trained for four of five months," said Coach Perry. "They are all very new to the sport in general, and they're hoping to all have a great introductory row."
After the Winter break, these athletes will be heading into what's called the "sprint season", instead of these long marathon-type rows, they'll be doing more interval-type work.
