San Mateo Libraries Help Replenish Second Harvest Food Banks

Community members can donate food to have their library fines waived during the month of December.

Community members with library fines are in luck this holiday season -- San Mateo libraries are participating in the 2013 “Food for Fines” promotion.

During the month of December, community members can donate food and have their library fines waived. The effort will help replenish the inventory at the Second Harvest Food Bank in time for distribution to families in need during the holiday season.

Each year, Second Harvest Food Bank distributes more than 45.5 million pounds of nutritious food to low-income people in Santa Clara and San Mateo counties. Most recipients are children and seniors.

The millions of pounds of food are provided free to 326 local nonprofit agencies at more than 700 sites, including pantries, soup kitchens, shelters, and after-school programs.

Library customers can take any amount of nonperishable boxed or canned food to any of the San Mateo Public Library’s locations, including the Main Library (55 W. Third Avenue), Hillsdale Branch (205 W. Hillsdale Blvd.) and Marina Branch (1530 Susan Court).
