Woman Fatally Struck in San Mateo Crosswalk

A 66-year-old woman was fatally struck by a car while crossing a street in San Mateo early Saturday morning, police said in a news release late Monday afternoon.

The crash happened at about 6:15 a.m. in the area of 25th Avenue and El Camino Real, San Mateo Police Sgt. Dave Norris said.

The pedestrian, identified by the San Mateo County coroner's office as Shama Ayyad, of San Mateo, was struck while crossing El Camino Real east in a crosswalk at 25th Avenue.

Ayyad was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The driver of the involved vehicle, an 18-year-old San Carlos woman driving a newer model SUV, remained at the scene.

DUI does NOT appear to have been a factor in this collision, and the exact dynamics of the incident, including the low light conditions, speed of the vehicle, and the direction of traffic signals at the time remain under investigation, Norris said.

SMPD Traffic Personnel will submit the results of their complex and extensive investigation to the District Attorney’s Office for review, if appropriate.
