Rain, Wind Expected Throughout Week

Strong storm front dumps about an inch of rain Tuesday night; more on the way.

Tuesday night was a wet one for San Mateo after a powerful storm front swept over the region, dropping about an inch of rain, blowing down branches and causing about 600 city residents to lose power.

Overall, the storm caused very little damage in San Mateo, although 40-plus-mile-an-hour gusts did cause a few minor glitches.

“In San Mateo, two outages were reported last night … impacting approximately 600 customers in the city of San Mateo,” said PG&E spokesperson Fiona Chan.

The much larger outage, she said, took place between about 11:30 p.m. and 1:15 a.m., and was caused by a failed circuit in Burlingame after a tree fell on power lines there.

A smaller outage affected only about eight customers, she said. All power was restored as of 10:30 a.m. Wednesday.

By morning, residents were greeted with puffy clouds, scattered showers and a wet commute.

According to National Weather Service, last night’s storm front was the strongest of a series of fronts passing over the region this week. Scattered showers are expected to continue over the next few days, and the forecast even calls for a slight chance of thunderstorms capable of producing hail. Highs in the mid 50s and west winds of 10 to 20 miles per hour are expected.
