Job Hunters Boot Camp Provides a Career Workout

Participants can rehearse interview techniques, press social media into service, and get one-on-one resume critiques; special attention to vets and mature job seekers.

Those who attend the Seventh Job Hunters Boot Camp Wednesday will get face time with more than 20 local employers who are hiring, including Franklin Templeton, Kaiser Permanente, UCSF Medical Center and Virgin America.

That much might be expected at a job fair. But at the aptly named Boot Camp, hosted by U.S. Rep. Jackie Speier, they will build new skills with the help of expert advisors, practice sessions and guided workshops.

The day includes one-on-one resume and interview critique sessions, and special focus workshops for veterans and mature job seekers.

Speier said she designed the Boot Camps to be a place where job seekers can load up on skills -- adding social media to their career tool boxes, for instance.

“I understand that looking for work is a full time job and sometimes giving up might seem like your only option,” Speier said in a statement promoting the event. “You are not alone. Please use this event to reenergize and inspire your job search and connect with others who are going through similar challenges.”

Speier rotates the Boot Camps between College of San Mateo, the County Fairgrounds, and the SSF Conference Center.

The event and parking are free. The only requirement is to register for the Job Hunters Boot Camp.

Participants can bring or buy lunch onsite.

The Seventh Job Hunters Boot Camp takes place from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 9 at the South San Francisco Conference Center.
