POLL: Where's the Best Spot to Take a Tourist in San Mateo?

A park? The mall? Bowling? Where in San Mateo would a tourist want to go?!

San Mateo is a unique city. We have parks, both urban and rural; a bustling downtown; numerous Farmers Markets; a giant shopping mall... the list goes on!

But say you only have one day to show a visiting friend or relative around San Mateo, and leaving the city isn't an option. Where would you take them?

We've picked a few places we think would be fun for a tourist, but of course, if we left any off the list, be sure to let us know in the comments!

Voting will close at 9 a.m. Friday, and we'll post the winner at noon that day.

I would take her on a bicycle ride along the Sawyer Camp Trail or the San Mateo Bay Trail.

Wow, I think it depends on the interests of the visitor. We have the bay trail to walk or bike, or kite board/wind surf, kayaking, great dining and shopping, wonderful Sawyer Camp trail for walking or biking Chrystal Springs, Bike Canada Road, Fioli, golf course, coyote point and marina take a boat ride, a terrific library, Central Park concerts during summer ...so much to choose from! We are a gateway to so many wonderful places, Silicon Valley, Half Moon Bay Coast, Skyline to Woodside, San Mateo is great for visitors! ...

You missed my favorite: Seal Point Park. Great view, cool wind sculptures, and sometimes great wildflowers.

The very BEST place is no longer here. Bay Meadows was, and will always be the biggest mistake San Mateo made by closing it down.

Agree, it depends on both the visitor and their expectations for that trip
Are they looking to move to some place in the SF Bayarea? Peninsula? Or are they just visiting with no plans to move here? Not just the San Mateo boundaries, as most all of our historically significant places/things are associated outside of the city limits I used to work in acquisitions and the deal was with the new company exec's just made and had to show them around looking for places to live that is close to work To a person, they all said the cities on the Peninsula was just like any 'small town in the USA'. More so with San Mateo. The largest dam in the world that also survived the 1906 Earthquake that is also the model used to design the Hoover Dam....our Crystal Springs Dam...or tell the story of the Hech Hechi system and the Water Temple? Or that most of the Peninsula Cities evolved from the 'upper crust' from San Francisco spending their weekends in the 'country'...which...was the Peninsula Estates. That then had them disembark at the train stations along the Peninsula, which became the 'little' cities supporting them and the local farmers/ranchers/etc...to become full fledged cities with the ancillary amenities (hardware store, grocery store, butcher shop, shoe shop, etc, etc) It boils down to the individual...I know some folks outside of California that would be fascinated by the above to some who would be bored silly (they would prefer the SF nite life)

A walk down Sawyer Camp Road and lunch out in town perhaps but then it's off to Big Basin for the Redwoods, Ano Nuevo for the elephant seals, and always the museums of San Francisco with a sprinkling of SF tourist stuff like a cable car ride and Lombard Street or the Golden Gate. We are lucky to have so much so close by!

Whenever visitors come from out of the area (England, Italy, New York, etc) we show them things that they most likely have heard about - Silicon Valley, Oracle, Genentec; then we drive through (just a little) to see the beautiful estates of Hillsborough or Woodside, Sawyer Camp (if they are inclined to walk, otherwise we view it from lookout points), Half Moon Bay (our Carmel of San Mateo County), the fishing boats, Pescadero (a little country town with a great little restaurant for lunch), San Carlos and San Mateo's Downtown Districts and, of course, Belmont's renowned Notre Dame de Namur University. I was surprised that none of these were on the list?

How exciting to have some of the best orthotic specialists in the WORLD right here in our ownRead More backyard, and with such a commitment to patient care as their top priority! So glad to read this.

PS: Ideally, everybody will be able to sign up at the college website. But I have to acknowledgeRead More that some of the language may not be perfectly as clear as we'd like, especially if this is your first enrollment. So, if you need any assistance (or maybe aren't computer-savvy) the very nice Registrar Office people can assist you on 650/574-6165. Just tell them you want to sign up for Summer semester, Real Estate Practice 110 class, Course Reference number 54642 and that you'd like to complete the enrollment today. You'll like the class once we get you in! Thank you!

Among all the supporters isn't there one competent attorney who can get an injunction to keep theRead More rink from being destroyed and who can sue SPI Holding, and if necessary the City, to enforce the Master Plan Agreement? A toilet and an astro turf field are useless to ice skaters. I smell something rotten in the Mayor and the City Council's excuses. At least one skater must have a parent or family member who is an attorney with some sense of decency to do the work pro bono.

To close the ice rink is a crime. I had this conversation years ago with Peter Pau, the man whoRead More built it. We need places for children to recreate. When we send them to juvenile hall, we wring our hands and wonder why! No skate board parks in convenient places and now the skating rink. Why are our children the ones to sacrafice?
