Facebook, Google Among Top 5 Biggest Givers of 2012

Tech titans gave a staggering $684.4 million worth of stock.


Facebook Founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg made a splash in December when he gave a half-billion dollars worth of stock to the Silicon Valley Community Foundation (the exact figure is $498.8 million). But did you hear about Larry Page? The co-founder of Google also gave away an astounding amount of stock last year, valued at $185.6 million.

They were in the Top 5 of a list of most generous stock gifts made by Tech Moguls in 2012. The figures were compiled by Equilar and reported this week by The Wall Street Journal.

In fact, most of the donors who made the list live on the Peninsula.

Google’s Sergey Brin’s donation was worth $222.9 million, Oracle’s Larry Ellison’s gift was worth $45.4 million, while eBay founder and noted philanthropist Pierre Omidyar donated $441.3 million worth of eBay stock.  

All told, the Top 10 givers donated just under $1.5 billion worth of stock to charity in 2012. All declined comment.
