The San Mateo County Mosquito and Vector Control District will conduct a mosquito abatement treatment in San Mateo tonight following the recent detection of adult mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus, city officials.
Two pools of mosquitoes within a half-mile of each other in San Mateo have tested positive for West Nile virus in the last month, prompting district officials to spray insecticide between 11 p.m. today and 5 a.m. Tuesday.
The affected area is roughly bounded from Peninsula Avenue to Tilton Avenue and El Camino Real to North Humboldt Street, according to city officials.
In order to repel mosquitoes, the district suggests eliminating all standing water on a property, wearing proper protection during dawn and dusk, and applying insect repellent whenever necessary.
The district advises that the West Nile virus can be found in dead birds, squirrels and other small animals.
Anyone who notices the carcass of a bird or squirrel should report it to the West Nile virus hotline either online at www.westnile.ca.gov or by calling (877) WNV-BIRD (968-2473).
