San Carlans Respond to CT Shooting: 'We're Tired of Being Told There's Nothing We Can Do'

An impromptu group of concerned citizens gathered Saturday morning along Laurel Street to raise awareness for gun control in the wake of Friday's school shooting in Connecticut.

As the shock of Friday's lingered into Saturday morning, it prompted a outpouring of more than just grief and support for the victims' families---it spurred a small rally in downtown San Carlos for tighter gun laws and an increased awareness over the plight of the mentally ill.

Several members of the San Carlos community gathered at the corner of Laurel and Arroyo streets on a chilly, gray morning, and although there was the expected hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers passing by, many stopped to contemplate the messages displayed on the signs of the participants.

Organizers Kim McGreivy and Robin Stearns said taking to the corner to get their message out was spontaneous.

"We're forming a group," said McGreivy, who is a mother of a kindergartner.

"This is a spontaneous response to the violence yesterday. We are gathering names of people who want to join us."

A sign-up sheet was nearby for anyone wishing to join the newly formed group.

Robin Stearns said the discussion in the wake of Friday tragedy has to be about  both gun control and help for the mentally ill, which is why the women are forming San Carlos Parents for Better Gun Control.

"This is not just about mental illness--it's about guns too," said Stearns.

Even McGreivy's dog, Olivia got in on the action, wearing a sign that said "Wag More" on one side and "Shoot Less" on the other.

"We're tired of being told there's nothing we can do," added Stearns.

The women say they will be developing a website for their newly formed organization.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
