Plenty Going On in San Mateo This Summer

Several family-friendly events and festivals kick off next week.

It's true that a couple of San Mateo's traditional summer festivals this year. But there is still so much to look forward to. San Mateo is a great town for celebrating summer, and this year will be no different.

So what is happening in San Mateo this summer? Following is a list of some of the food, music, art and fun you can expect. We hope to see you there!

Central Park Music Series

What: Every Thursday this summer, live musical acts will perform in San Mateo's Central Park. From reggae (Native Elements) to country (California Cowboys) and some salsa, soft-rock and pop in between, there's a band for every music lover. This is a family friendly event.
When: Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m., from June 23 to Aug. 11. Click here for the full line-up and list of dates.
Where: , downtown San Mateo, at the corner of 5th Avenue and El Camino Real.
Cost: Free

Movable Feast and the Local Label Faire

What: Movable Feast is bringing over 20 food trucks to San Mateo for an afternoon of gourmet mobile eats -- the largest meet-up of food trucks on the Peninsula. The Local Label Faire will also be put on in conjunction with the food fest as a showcase of local fashion, art and design.
When: Friday, July 1, 5:30-10 p.m.
Where: , 1346 Saratoga Drive.
Cost: Free admission, $10 parking. 

Free Family Golf Night at Poplar Creek Golf Course

What: A free round of golf for the family at San Mateo's premiere golf course, Poplar Creek. This one is going on all summer long!
When: Every Friday evening from July 1 to Sept. 2. Starts at 6:30 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.
Where: , 1700 Coyote Point Drive, San Mateo.

Relay for Life San Mateo-Foster City

What: Relay for Life is an annual walk-and-run fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. Adults and youth are welcome, and forming a fundraising team pre-race day is encouraged -- and fun!
When: This 24-hour event goes from Saturday, July 9 to Sunday, July 10, 10 a.m. to 10 a.m.
Where: track course, 506 North Delaware St.
Cost: Free admission. Donations encouraged. 

Ice Cream Sundae Social featuring the Senior Center Band

What: Enjoy an ice-cream sundae fest with the folks at San Mateo's Senior Center. While there, hear musical performances by the center's members, have a sundae and support local programs for the elderly.
When: Monday, July 11 at 2 p.m.
Where: , 2645 Alameda De Las Pulgas.
Cost: $2

Family Entertainment Night @ King: Talent Show

What: A talent show for the family -- and you are the stars. Audition on July 18, and become a part of the talent show at King Community Center. Watch your neighbors sing, dance and show off their hidden talents.
Where: . 725 Monte Diablo Ave.
When: Saturday, July 30, 6-8 p.m.
Cost: Free

Hypercon

What: A convention for anime (Japanese animation) enthusiasts featuring guest artists, art contests, games and workshops. Cosplay (dressing in costume as your favorite anime character) is encouraged. 
When: Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 6 and 7.
Where: , 1346 Saratoga Drive.
Cost: At the door, tickets are $25 weekend; $15 Saturday or Sunday. Advanced registration is also available online for a discounted rate of $12 for one day or $20 for the weekend.

Show n' Shine Rod and Customs Car Show & Swap Meet

What: A car show and swap meet celebrating more than the classics: "Street Rods, Customs, Classics, Muscle Cars, Tricked Out Trucks, Sports Cars, Suede Kustoms, Suede Rods." This is a family friendly event.
When: Saturday, Aug. 6, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Where: , 1346 Saratoga Drive.
Cost: Tickets are $8 for general admission; children 12 and under are free. A car entry is $25 and admits two people.

Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.
