HISTORY QUIZ: Step Back in Time

The San Mateo County Historical Association staffers have thousands of photos that they need help identifying in order to caption them. Can you help them?

Thanks to Patch users  and  for giving us

However, we are still in need of

Can you help us?

The San Mateo County Historical Association still has many photos that need captions, after it recently purchased more than 30,000 San Mateo Times newspaper photos that span most of the 20th century and provide a glimpse into San Mateo County life and its generations.

Mitch Postel, president of the historical association, bought the photos from a collector for $2,500.

Own a little piece of history by looking at these photos and help the association find out about the story behind each one, so the group can archive them.

Peninsula Patch sites will publish various photos as we get them - usually on Thursday mornings - so you can help us identify them.

The back of this week's first photo reads: Barry Goldwater and Jack Bell, November 20, 1963.  Does anyone know who Jack Bell was?

The back of the other photo reads:  M.J. Mosunich, Jim Parmlee, Mrs. Dorothy Thein & son Roland; April 30, 1953; photo for 20-30 Club.  Does anyone know what the 20-30 club was?

Please note in the comments if you have information about the photos attached.

Then call or e-mail  archivist, Carol Peterson, if you want more information. Carol can be reached by phone, (650) 299-0104, or email, carol@historysmc.org

I believe Bell was Goldwater's biographer.

No Tommy Tee, I think Steve really knows his stuff---there are some insights he has on these history quizzes that are way above anything found on Google (same with Jim Clifford and Lou Covey:) ). The "institutional memory" of these gentlemen is a gift to our county.

came across this post from a google alert on "20-30 Club" This is a great idea. 20-30 Club has become the Active 20-30 Club USA & Canada. I would be happy to help as I can and would love to hear anymore you have regarding 20-30. I am currently the National History Chair for the organization. Still going strong with several bay area clubs helping raise money for children's charities. (email: mchlspil@gmail.com) thanks!

Lou: Active 20-30 is alive and well, working to develop young leaders and serve children in-need in our local communities. We have roughly 50 chapters across the US with clubs as far reaching as NY, IN, KS, CO, WA, OR and NV. The majority reside in California. We have an international presence throughout Latin America. I actually just wrapped up my term as National President a few weeks ago and was so excited to see this article. -Trena Roudebush MrsRoudy@gmail.com www.Active20-30.com
