Based on E.L. Doctrow's classic novel, the lives of three families come together as they experience the joys and the pains of turn-of-the-century life from the upper-class of New Rochelle, the African America population in Harlem, and the immigrants coming from Ellis Island.

Ragtime is written by Lynn Ahrens (lyrics) and Stephen Flaherty (music), who are know for the hit musicals Sussical and Once on This Island, and features a book by Terrence McNally (author of Hillbarn's hit play Master Class)  Called by Time Magazine "A triumph for the stage," and by the International Herald Tribune "the best musical in twenty years," Ragtime won three Tony awards for its sweeping story of what it is to be an American.

Hillbarn's cast of Ragtime features Annmarie Martin* as Mother, David Martin as Father, Steven Ennis as Younger Brother, C.J. Blankenship* as Coalhouse Walker, Leslie Ivy as Sarah, Tyler Bennett as Tateh, plus an ensemble of 46 actors from around the Bay Area. Performers with * are members of Actor's Equity.

Lee Foster directs the production, with music direction by Greg Sudmeier, Deborah Lambert as Assistant Music Director, choreography by Jayne Zabanr, and fight choreography by Durand Garcia. This is a co-production of Notre Dame de Namur University.

On Friday, August 31st, Ragtime opens with a special Champagne Gala, celebrating the show and the start of Hillbarn Theatre's 72nd season.  Performances are Thursday - Saturday 8 PM and Sundays at 2 PM. Hillbarn Theatre is location at 1285 East Hillsdale Blvd in Foster City.  For tickets and information, call 650-349-6411 or visit www.HillbarnTheatre.org.

I see that I meant to type "...that connect us to the past," but I accidentally typedRead More "...and connect us to the past." I think my meaning came through, though. Yes, the world does not need another national chain retail store or restaurant, which is surely what they're planning to put in there.

Yes Bren, agree with you....good point.....really what it seems to come down to is money vs. theRead More good of the community and richness of traditions. And all despite the Master Plan for that site in San Mateo that seems to require an ice skating rink or similar recreational facility AT THAT SITE, and all despite the fact the Ice Chalet would like to continue operations there. The Developer has made it difficult to impossible for any ice rink to operate there (tricky it seems)....so they can get a cookie cutter retail outlet in ? .....very, very sad for the youth of the community.

I think the issue is much larger than whether children will experience stress. That ice rink is aRead More local institution, dating back at least to when Fashion Island was there. It's terrible for communities to lose so many landmarks and connect us to the past.

Dear Ari, Thank you for your service to our community. It's wonderful that you are already making aRead More difference.
