State Superintendent Urges Parents to Vaccinate Students

Parents of students entering seventh grade must vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law.

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tom Torlakson this week is urging parents of students entering the seventh grade to vaccinate their children to protect them against whooping cough as required by California law. “I call on all parents to act as soon as possible and ensure their children receive this important vaccination,” Torlakson said in a statement. “Taking a few minutes now will help protect your child’s health, and help them get off to a smooth start in the next school year,” he said. According to Dr. Ron Chapman, Director of the California Department of Public Health, in 2010, 9,000 Californians were diagnosed with pertussis and 10 infants died from the disease. “Due to the collective statewide vaccination efforts this …

Suspected Caltrain Vending Machine Thiefs Appear in Court

The pair are accused of stealing more than $40,000 from machines they were repairing.

A preliminary hearing for two longtime San Mateo County Transit District employees accused of stealing from Caltrain ticket vending machines they were assigned to repair has finally been completed, nearly a year after the two appeared for an initial felony arraignment on June 21, 2011. Orvilla Taylor, 59, and Herbert Todd, 53, appeared in San Mateo Superior Court Tuesday morning before Judge Cliff Cretan. The two have pleaded not guilty to charges of embezzlement and grand theft in connection with the alleged thievery, in which prosecutors say Taylor and Todd, who repaired ticket vending machines for the county’s transit district for more than 20 years, would remove damaged ticket machines and bring them to headquarters. On 12 such …

San Mateo Pays Tribute on National Peace Officers Memorial Day

San Mateo is also honoring Sgt. Gordon Joinville, who was killed in 1968 and is the only San Mateo police officer to die in the line of duty.

The city of San Mateo will fly its flags at half mast on Tuesday in remembrance of peace officers who have fallen in the line of duty. In honor of National Peace Officers Memorial Day on Tuesday, the remainder of the week has also been proclaimed National "Police Week," city officials announced Monday. In recognition of Peace Officers Memorial Day, President Obama encouraged all flags to be flown at half mast. "We owe a profound debt to all those who have worn the badge, and to the families whose care enables them to serve with courage and pride," Obama said. "When the unthinkable happens and officers give their lives or are seriously injured in the line of duty, we have an obligation to give their loved ones the support they deserve. …

Beresford Students Send Care Packages to Soldiers

Kindergarten and first grade students put some boxes of cookies together and wrote cards of encouragement, and thank you's to the soldiers.

Beresford Elementary School's Daisy Troop 62043, a mixture of kindergarten and first-grade students, sent cookies and hand-written cards to soldiers in Afghanistan on Thursday. When San Mateo mom Kathy Flocas learned she was in charge of May's pedal badge, Consideration and Caring, she thought the girls needed to get a taste of what's going on in the world. She asked them what a soldier was, and almost all the girls knew a soldier is a person who protects our country from others who want to do harm. The girls wrote thank you's for protecting our country and said they knew the Pledge of Allegiance. The girls colored "We Salute You" coloring pages, wrote individual cards to each service member, then helped pack two boxes full of cookies …

Memorial Day in San Mateo With the Screaming Eagles

The 40th Anniversary of the City's adoption of 101st Airborne Company A is a weekend long event!

Memorial Day means so many different things to the people across this nation. It marks the beginning of Summer with it's three day weekend filled with Bar-B-Qs, bargain sales, and fun in the sun. It is a time to remember those fallen heroes that served protecting us all. A time to visit the grave of a loved one. After the Civil War, Memorial Day developed from a day to decorate the graves of the war dead with flowers. Many towns claim to be the first to make this official. After World War l, the day was expanded to honor all who have died in American Wars.  Here in San Mateo, we take it a step further. Our patriotism run deep. Our pride is not just in our fallen heroes, but also in our everyday heroes that actively protect us now. This …

Kids Drug Safety Law Moves Forward

Eshoo’s legislation boosting safety of children’s medication clears key committee.

Two reauthorization bills written by Rep. Anna Eshoo that would make medication safer for kids cleared a key committee vote Thursday. The Best Pharmaceutical for Children Act (BPCA) and the Pediatric Research Equity Act (PREA) were approved unanimously by the House Energy and Commerce Committee and are now on their way to the House floor for consideration. The two bills were first passed by Congress in 1997 and 2003, respectively. “I’m thrilled by the Committee’s vote today,” Rep. Eshoo said in a press statement. “Doctors should not have to play a guessing game when it comes to prescribing medication to children. That’s why I’ve been working for more than a decade to make progress in pediatric drug labeling. Kids deserve access to the same…

Mayor Grotte Remembers John Lee as a 'Gentleman' and 'Scholar'

Lee died May 7 after battling cancer.

The San Mateo City Council is remembering former mayor and longtime council member John Lee, who died May 7, as a passionate and dedicated member of the San Mateo community. Mayor Brandt Grotte has ordered the flags at all City of San Mateo facilities to fly at half-staff through sunset on May 10 in memory of John’s service to the community. Grotte said one of John’s favorite quotes was, “Be the person that your dog thinks you are.”  “John Lee actually was that gentleman. He was a scholar; and a gentleman – always the gentleman," said Mayor Grotte. Council Member Jack Matthews said one of Lee’s truisms was, “We can disagree on items without being disagreeable,” and noted he was a man of great courage. Deputy Mayor David Lim said he and Lee…

I would like to personally thank all of you for your very kind words regarding my grandfather. He was a fervently dedicated man when it came to family, country and friends. He lived to serve the people that he cared about the most and for the last decade, this included the City of San Mateo and its constituents. The people he surrounded himself with were the reasons for making things better. …   more ›
