Special elections related to school districts are being held today in Santa Clara, San Mateo and Contra Costa counties. Measure A in Contra Costa County would impose a $225 parcel tax on residents living within the Moraga School District. The parcel tax would benefit the three elementary schools in the district and would remain in effect indefinitely. The election is being conducted by mail, though ballots can be dropped off at various locations listed on the county's elections website at www.cocovote.us. Two parcel tax measures are on the ballot in Santa Clara County. Measure A would impose an $84 parcel tax on properties within the Santa Clara Unified School District. Not surprisingly, Prop 29 is opposed by the tobacco industry. What do you think?
Two statewide measures will be included on the June ballot; one adds $1.00 to the cost of a pack of cigarettes, the other limits the term of new legislators heading to Sacramento to 12 years, down from the present 14. Most controversial is the battle over Proposition 29, already being fought on television sets and radio channels around the state and here in San Mateo County. It imposes an additional tax on cigarettes to fund additional cancer research. "It's a do-good thing," said Gene Mullin, a public policy consultant. "You want to stop cancer, and you want to stop smoking, particularly with youngsters. By increasing the cost of cigarettes it's going to dissuade many youngsters from starting." According to the California Secretary of …

Supervisor candidate Andy Cohen says the extra property taxes generated would benefit the county's poor.
Virtually to a person, candidates for the open San Mateo County Board of Supervisor District 4 position believe the answer to traffic congestion on the Peninsula is by creating more housing near our transportation corridors. “We have to make it easy for people by creating this housing, and make people want to do it,” said Ernie Schmidt, a Redwood City Planning Commissioner, at a Saturday morning breakfast in Millbrae hosted by the North Peninsula Democratic Club. “Let’s have smart growth, and create a smart, reliable system,” said Memo Morantes, a member of the San Mateo County Board of Education. But one candidate stepped away from the pack with his own ideas. Andy Cohen, a Menlo Park City Council member, wants local homeowners to build…

The Republican presidential candidate came to town for a fundraising dinner early this evening at the Hotel Sofitel.
Protesters from three groups were waiting for Presidential candidate Mitt Romney when he arrived for an exclusive fundraising dinner tonight in Redwood City. Activist groups protesting outside the 5:30 p.m. reception included Occupy Redwood City, Raging Grannies and the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment. Raging Grannies member Ruth Robertson said her group adopted "billionaire personas" as they stood outside the event with signs mocking people who were driving in to attend. Protesters wore fake fur and held signs reading "Corporations are People, Too," she said. "We think by mocking them it might bring them down a rung or two," Robertson said. Members of Occupy Redwood City also attended the protest as "pretend" …
