Mid-Peninsula Boys & Girls Club Holds Spring Art Show

The art show offered works by more than 50 club members.

Paintings, sculptures and an assortment of other original work were on display as guests mingled with artists and staff. Representatives from Art in Action, City Arts of San Mateo, civic leaders and art aficionados were all impressed with the degree of talent on display. Pianos for a Song

Yamaha pianos are for sale at NDNU at discounted prices.

  The public is invited to take part in the sale of Yamaha and digital pianos this week at Notre Dame de Namur University (NDNU). The pianos are on loan to the Department of Music and Vocal Arts through a special loan program with the Yamaha Piano Corporation, and the university is making them available for purchase at institutional discounts. The sale will include baby grands, grands, professional uprights, digital pianos, and used name-brand pianos, including Yamaha, Bosendorfer, restored Steinway and more. It's the weekend of Cinco de Mayo, so many will be out celebrating the Mexican holiday. But there are other activities going on this weekend, and we thought you'd like to know.

Starr Shines at Hillbarn

Former Broadway actor Bill Starr performed with Jackie Gleason, Carol Burnett and Kevin Kline. He directs "The Producers," which opens Friday at Foster City's Hillbarn Theatre.

During the peak of his acting career, Bill Starr the actor performed in Broadway shows with Jackie Gleason, Carol Burnett  and Kevin Kline. Bill Star the director is now focused on the development a fresh young crop of budding actors. "Being around comics, actors and directors with that kind of talent, I was very fortunate to be in that company when I was learning my craft," Starr said. "Now I have the opportunity to spread it and to share it." Starting this later week, Starr will share it with audiences in Foster City. Ashton Kutcher Spotted in Downtown Palo Alto

Ashton Kutcher got his sweet treat fix Friday afternoon at Yoppi Yogurt in downtown Palo Alto. The actor looked thin.... perhaps losing weight in preparation for playing Steve Jobs in the upcoming movie, "Jobs." Film production is slated to begin in May. Kutcher was sporting jeans and a plaid blue shirt and sauntered into the frozen yogurt shop at about 2 p.m. with an unidentified woman. "He just had his head down and didn't really look up at me," said Yoppi Yogurt employee Jesse Wiley. "He refused tester cups - just mixed and matched a bit of everything, it was massive, a $10 yogurt." Local Actors Show Their Skills in 'Once Upon A Mattress'

The community theater group Pied Piper Players brings a fun, family-friendly show to the Peninsula beginning this weekend with "Once Upon A Mattress."

Peninsula residents will transform into royalty, court jesters, minstrels and a slew of other medieval characters this weekend when the Burlingame-based Pied Piper Players community theater group opens its production of Once Upon a Mattress. Based on the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Princess and the Pea, 75 thespians from towns including Burlingame, Belmont, San Mateo, Foster City and Menlo Park take on more than a dozen musical numbers throughout the fun, family-friendly play. Know eBooks? Digital Bookmobile to Give Answers

The download experience promotes free eBook and eAudiobook download services available at the San Mateo County Library.

The Digital Bookmobile will make a mostly analog appearance in Foster City in late April. The 18-wheel tractor-trailer Bookmobile gives instruction to patrons on how to use the free eBook and eAudiobook download services available through the San Mateo County Library. You'll be able to catch the rolling tour at the Foster City Library on April 25 from 1 to 7p.m. At the event, readers will be taught how to download eBooks and eAudiobooks from the Library through interactive demonstrations and high-definition instructional videos. Documentary Fest Announces Call for Entries

Cash prizes and software packages will be awarded to winners.

The United Nations Association is seeking entries for its venerable film festival this fall. The 15th United Nations Association Film Festival (UNAFF) will take place this October in Palo Alto, East Palo Alto, San Francisco and Stanford. This year the documentary festival will emphasize the theme of human dignity, and is looking for films focusing on human rights, the environment, protection of refugees, famine, homelessness, racism, disease control, women’s issues, children, universal education, war and peace. Filmmakers can submit their work in 16mm, 35mm, Beta SP, Blue Ray DVD, or DVD (NTSC). Previews must be DVD format (NTSC Region 0 or 1) and be tested before submission. All lengths are eligible.
