Why Your Tap Water May Be Discolored

The discoloration of tap water in San Mateo is temporary, officials say.

San Mateo residents are being advised that tap water may be temporarily discolored Wednesday due to water pressure testing.

The testing, being conducted Wednesday within the city by Cal Water, may cause sediment to rise and discolor the water coming from your tap.

The water is safe to drink and use, i.e., there no need to boil it first, and running your tap for one to two minutes should clear up the discoloration.

Any discoloration of the water that is caused by the pressure test should clear up completely within 24 hours.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Cal Water directly at (650) 343-1808.
