Streets Alive Comes to San Mateo

East 5th Avenue given over to foot and bike traffic as part of countywide event.

Hundreds of locals enjoyed a gorgeous day Sunday as they strolled East 5th Avenue—minus car traffic—as part of this year’s Streets Alive event.

The event, organized by county Supervisor Carole Groom, had a dozen cities around the Peninsula closing streets to vehicles to help “incorporate more modes of alternative transportation in people’s day and life.”

In San Mateo, 5th Avenue was blocked to cars between Laurel Avenue and El Camino Real. Part of bordering Central Park was also set aside for Streets Alive games and activities.

Out on the pavement, local YMCA representatives were out with jump ropes and hula hoops to get kids moving. They also painted four-square and hopscotch courts on the street, and passed out T-shirts.

The event, billed as “Families on the Move,” featured a stage with people leading yoga and other activities for people of all ages. Part of the street was even given over to pets (dogs especially) with lessons from expert dog trainer Eric Dorfman.

This was only the second Streets Alive event, but organizers say they are encouraged and plan to hold it again next year.
